Now, let’s dive into the unique substitution rules that set Euros Fantasy apart from FPL. This article will equip you with all the knowledge you need to make game-changing substitutions throughout the tournament and climb the leaderboard.

Euros 2024 Substitution Rules Explained

First, it’s important to note that you can make unlimited substitutions within your squad between matchdays. However, after all matches on a single day have finished and before the next matches within that matchday kick off, you can:

  • Substitute up to 4 players (unless they’ve been sent off) and replace them with any of your substitutes whose teams are yet to play within the matchday. Players you sub out will score 0 points for that matchday.
  • Change your captain to another player from your squad whose team has yet to play. The original captain’s double-points bonus will be lost, and the new captain’s score for that matchday will be doubled.

Bear in mind that:

  • You cannot substitute players into your starting XI or change to a captain who has already played in that matchday.
  • Once you confirm your substitutions or change of captain, these changes cannot be reversed.
  • Once the games on the final day of the matchday have kicked off, you cannot make changes to your team. Any changes you make will only apply to the next matchday.
  • Once you manually make a substitution in a matchday, automatic substitutions will be disabled for that matchday.
  • You need to save your changes before the matchday kicks off for them to take effect. If you start adjusting your squad just before the deadline but save your changes after it has passed, your changes won’t apply to that day’s matches.

Mid-Matchday Substitutions Tip

TIP: Because you can make substitutions mid-matchday, try to pick a squad with players who play on different days within the matchday. This way, if some of your initial players don’t perform well, you can sub them out for players who have a better chance of earning more points.

Example Scenario:
Imagine your matchday lasts from Friday to Sunday. You choose some players who play on Friday and some who play on Saturday and Sunday. If your Friday players don’t do well, you can sub them out for your Saturday and Sunday players who haven’t played yet.

Automatic Substitutions

If you don’t make any substitutions or change your captain within a matchday, some of your players might be automatically subbed out. Here’s how it works:

  1. Setting Sub Priorities: Arrange your substitutes in the order you want them to be subbed in, just in case some of your starting XI don’t play.
  2. Goalkeeper Substitutions:
    • If your starting goalkeeper doesn’t play, your replacement goalkeeper will be subbed in, provided he has played and you haven’t made any manual changes to your squad during that matchday.
  3. Outfield Player Substitutions:
    • If any of your starting outfield players don’t play, they’ll be automatically subbed out. The player subbed in will be your highest-priority substitute who has played, ensuring the team formation rules are not broken.
    • Formation Rules: Your team must always have 1 goalkeeper, at least 3 defenders, at least 2 midfielders, and at least 1 forward. For example, if your team has 3 defenders and one doesn’t play, he’ll be subbed out for the highest-priority defender on your bench.

Important Notes:

  • If you switch the priority order of your substitutes after the matchday has started, it counts as a manual change. This will disable automatic substitutions for the rest of that matchday.
  • Automatic subs will only occur if you don’t make any manual changes, such as changing your captain, making manual subs, or altering the priority order of your substitutes. Even if you revert to your original setup after making changes, automatic subs will be disabled for that matchday.
  • If you create your team partway through a matchday, you won’t be able to make automatic subs for that first matchday.

Example Scenario:

You have a defender in your starting XI who didn’t play on Saturday. If you haven’t made any manual changes, the highest-priority defender on your bench who played will automatically be subbed in, ensuring your formation remains valid.
