In Gameweek 2 of FPL, over 400,000 managers played their Triple Captain chip on Manchester City’s forward, Erling Haaland.
This strategy seemed sound, as Manchester City faced newly promoted Ipswich Town, who had just come off a match against Liverpool, where they conceded the most big chances in Gameweek 1.
With such a vulnerable defense going up against the best attack in the league, it’s no surprise that over 400,000 FPL managers decided to unleash their Triple Captain chip.
400K FPL Managers Reap Massive Triple Captain Reward
The bravery of these FPL managers was handsomely rewarded as Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick, earned all three bonus points, and returned 17 points—tripled to a staggering 51 FPL points.
However, it wasn’t as straightforward as it seems as Haaland and Manchester City found themselves a goal down within the first ten minutes. But City quickly responded, with Savio drawing a penalty that Haaland coolly slotted into the bottom left corner.
Haaland wasn’t finished yet. He added a third for the Sky Blues with a clinical finish inside the box after evading the Ipswich defense.
In the 88th minute, Haaland sealed his hat-trick with a stunning shot from outside the box. GOAAAAAL FOR MAN CITY! Muric was caught completely off guard as Haaland completed his hat-trick in style.
A Moment In History
With 477,386 managers playing their Triple Captain chip on Haaland in Gameweek 2 of the 2024/25 season, this ranks among the top five most popular uses of the chip in FPL history.
After his stunning hat-trick performance, these managers were richly rewarded, making it another legendary Triple Captain moment.
According to reports from FPL Focal on X, even Erling Haaland’s own father triple-captained his son in his FPL team this gameweek.
Even Haaland himself took to Instagram after the game against Ipswich Town, asking: ‘Did you triple captain me?’ It seems the thought might have been on his mind during the match.
I’m thrilled to have witnessed this moment, as I was one of the 400,000 managers who handed Haaland the triple captain armband. Like every other Haaland triple captainer this week, I’ve been rewarded with a sea of green arrows.
There’s still plenty of football to look forward to this gameweek, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Brentford yet to play. And as an FPL manager who doesn’t own Mo Salah, I am hoping the Liverpool winger can have a quite day at the office tomorrow.
