Gareth Southgate has named a provisional 30-man England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany, sparking debate with some notable omissions. The final 26-man squad will be announced in June, just ahead of the tournament opener
Big Names Miss Out
Southgate’s selections have raised eyebrows, with established players like Marcus Rashford, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Nick Pope, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, and Levi Colwill all left out.
Southgate Explains Decisions
When questioned about the absence of key figures like Rashford and Henderson, Southgate offered limited explanations. Regarding Rashford, he simply stated, “Other players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons. That’s it.”
Southgate acknowledged the difficulty of omitting Henderson, a player known for his leadership and support within the squad. However, he cited a recent injury as the deciding factor: “He’s missed five weeks and hasn’t been able to get to the intensity required.”
Shaw’s Inclusion Raises Questions
While some players were noticeably absent, the inclusion of left-back Luke Shaw has also generated discussion. With Shaw having missed significant playing time due to injury, his selection surprised many.
Southgate acknowledged the concerns, stating, “He’s up against it. He’s missed a lot of football.” He went on to explain the rationale behind the call-up: “Given his status as our first-choice left-back, we’re willing to give him a bit longer to regain fitness.” However, Southgate tempered expectations, admitting, “I’ve spoken with him, and I have to be honest, he’s a long shot to make the final squad.”
This comment suggests Shaw is included for evaluation purposes, with a chance to prove his fitness before the final cuts are made in June.
