Switzerland Names Provisional Euros Squad: Targeting Group A Escape

Swiss manager Murat Yakin has unveiled a provisional 36-man squad ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany. This marks Switzerland’s sixth appearance in the UEFA European Championship.

Group A Challenge Awaits

Switzerland finds themself placed in Group A alongside Germany, Scotland, and Hungary. While a tricky group, Switzerland is expected to challenge for a second-place finish and secure passage to the knockout stages. To achieve this goal, manager Yakin will need to finalize a 26-man squad from this provisional selection.

Here’s a Look at Switzerland’s Provisional Squad (by position):

  • Goalkeepers: Yann Sommer (Inter Milan), Yvon Mvogo (Lorient), Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Marvin Keller (Winterthur), Pascal Loretz (Luzern)
  • Defenders: Ricardo Rodriguez (Torino), Fabian Schar (Newcastle United), Manuel Akanji (Manchester City), Nico Elvedi (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Silvan Widmer (Mainz 05), Kevin Mbabu (Augsburg), Ulisses Garcia (Marseille), Cedric Zesiger (Wolfsburg), Leonidas Stergiou (Stuttgart), Aurelien Amenda (Young Boys), Albion Hajdari (Lugano), Bryan Okoh (Red Bull Salzburg)
  • Midfielders: Granit Xhaka (Bayer Leverkusen), Xherdan Shaqiri (Chicago Fire), Remo Freuler (Bologna), Denis Zakaria (Monaco), Michel Aebischer (Bologna), Fabian Rieder (Rennes), Uran Bislimi (Lugano), Ardon Jashari (Luzern), Filip Ugrinic (Young Boys), Vincent Sierro (Toulouse)
  • Forwards: Breel Embolo (Monaco), Steven Zuber (AEK Athens), Ruben Vargas (Augsburg), Renato Steffen (Lugano), Noah Okafor (AC Milan), Zeki Amdouni (Burnley), Andi Zeqiri (Genk), Dan Ndoye (Bologna), Kwado Duah (Ludogorets), Joel Monteiro (Young Boys)

Despite the final selection choices by manager Murat Yakin, Switzerland boasts a talented provisional squad with the potential to make a deep run in Euro 2024.

Switzerland’s best showing in the Euros came in 2020 when they reached the quarter-finals. With their current squad depth and experience, replicating that feat, or even pushing for a historic semi-final appearance, is a realistic possibility. However, only time will tell how far they can progress in the tournament.
